Explorer's dream safari itinerary

Begin your time in Zambia at NKONZI BUSH CAMP(Nights 1, 2, 3 & 4)

Highlights

Sheer tranquillity with almost no trappings of the modern world | The opportunity to explore remote areas of South Luangwa National Park that few visitors reach | Expert, personal guiding by owner and safari guide Gavin Opie | Breakfasts cooked over a camp fire | See the breath-taking Milky Way with zero light pollution!

Nkonzi Bush Camp is small and evocative, with a vintage bush camp atmosphere. The camp has just two double and two twin tents, with a maximum of eight guests at any one time.

The canvas safari tents are simple, but with all the comforts you need. Wooden framed beds, white cotton bed linens, fluffy towels and a small seating area are all provided. Each tent also has a en-suite bathroom attached with flush toilet, basin and hot water bucket shower.

A grove of soaring African Mahogany trees shades the main seating and dining area. Here you’ll find a charming bush lounge where you can while away a few hours exchanging stories with Gavin and your fellow guests.

The small bar serves a variety of drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic.

Closer to the riverbank is the camp fire, a hub of activity and socialising during the hush of early morning and chill of the African evening. Delicious home cooked meals are prepared in the Nkonzi Camp bush kitchen and the chefs are proud to use locally sourced, fresh ingredients to create their popular menu.

A typical day in camp begins with a light breakfast, followed by brunch after your first activity, then afternoon tea and finally a two course dinner with freshly baked bread. Dietary intolerances are happily catered for, as are special occasions.

Meals are eaten together at the long, convivial dining table. At night you can drink in the sight of the stunning Milky Way emblazoned across the night sky from horizon to horizon; stargazing while you’re eating dinner is an experience never to be forgotten.

Activities

Driving safaris:

Morning drives leave camp around 06h00. Tea and coffee is brought along for a mid-morning tea break and you will return to camp at around 10h00 for brunch and the restful midday hours. Night drives leave camp at around 16h00 after afternoon tea. Cold drinks are
enjoyed at sundown and a spotlight is used so that game viewing can continue at night. The drive ends at 20h00 at which time you return to camp for dinner.

Walking safaris:

Our walking safaris are always escorted by an armed scout. Morning walks will either depart directly from camp at 06h00 or your guide will drive you a short way from camp before continuing on foot. Walks last anywhere between 2-4 hours according to guest preference. You will return to camp at around 10h00. We also offer an afternoon walk which can be combined with a night drive. An
afternoon walk will set out at 16h00 and can be continued until sunset.

All-day safari:

We offer all-day drives to those who stay with us for a minimum of four nights and one all-day drive is therefore included in your package. You will set off from camp at 06h00 and return to camp at 20h00. You will be sent with a delicious packed lunch along with drinks for mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee breaks. During the heat of the day you will stop and relax for lunch – usually for around 2 hours, so be sure to pack a good book!

Expert, personal guiding by owners Kyle Branch and Luke Evans.

Flexible daily itinerary tailored to guests’ needs.

The Camp

Tusk and Mane Safaris have three stunning camp locations: Tafara Springs, Kutali Island and Buffalo Island. All three sites are situated at prime areas in the heart of Lower Zambezi National Park, near the Zambezi River. There are two types of camp – both fully mobile. The base camp complements the Lower Zambezi wilderness with hot bucket showers and canvas tents. Each tent also contains
bedside tables with lamps, comfortable chairs and a shelf system. Single and double tents are available and there is a complimentary laundry service.

The fly camp has 4 tents. Each tent contains two lightweight camp beds, a table with a solar torch and a water jug. There are 2 bathroom facilities which are well lit at night and a short distance away from the sleeping tents.

A campfire and refrigerated bar truly make staying at both camps an intimate and social experience.

The camp values high quality, satisfying meals to fuel your adventure, which can be enjoyed in the comfy, shaded seating area with your fellow guests.

The owners Luke Evans and Kyle Branch are passionate about giving you an experience that brings you in touch with the Lower Zambezi eco-system. Both guides draw on many years of guiding experience to give you an informative and fascinating trip.

Activities

All activities are flexible, meaning that guests’ itineraries during their stay can be planned in a way that suits them.

Walking safaris:

Walking safaris depart from camp at 06h00 and usually return around 14h00. Walks usually cover a few miles and are taken at a leisurely pace. A professional guide and a Wildlife Police Officer will accompany you.

Day and Night drive:

Your driving safaris will be in an open-topped 4WD Land Cruiser, and take place in prime game viewing areas.

Canoeing safaris:

Kyle Branch leads all canoeing safaris along with a team of back-up paddlers who will pilot you and your canoe down 3 different channels of the Zambezi River.

Boating & Fishing:

Conducting your safari from the water is a great way to bird watch. You can also get a great view of animals on the rivers banks. Sundown drinks on the Zambezi River will be a memorable part of your trip.

Fishing is conducted May – November and operates on a catch-release basis in order to insure the fish population on the Lower Zambezi increases.

The Pontoon boat offers a stable platform for fishing, and the Aliboat is large enough for four fisherman. All equipment is provided.
